Lightkeeper Henry Rosendale raised Angora goats at Point Hueneme Lighthouse reservation in southern California, marking the Santa Barbara Channel. The name Hueneme was derived from a Chumash word meaning “resting place,” an appropriate moniker for the handsome, Carpenter Gothic–style sentinel and its pastoral surroundings of fields and wildflowers. Rosendale was known in this small community of farmers and fishermen for his kindness and charitable ways. To help the war effort in 1918, he donated forty-six pounds of Angora goat wool to the Red Cross to make hats and sweaters, plus an Angora billy goat from his herd. The Red Cross resold the billy for a profit of $48—money desperately needed to help American soldiers in Europe.
